❖ Islamic Ruling on Husband-Wife Relations During Fasting
During the fasting hours of Ramadan or other obligatory fasts, Islamic teachings offer clear guidance on the limits of physical interaction between husband and wife.
➊ Qur'anic Guidance
Allah Almighty says:
"أُحِلَّ لَكُمْ لَيْلَةَ الصِّيَامِ الرَّفَثُ إِلَىٰ نِسَائِكُمْ ۚ"
(Surah Al-Baqarah: 187)
"It has been made lawful for you to be intimate with your wives during the nights of fasting."
➋ Hadith-Based Guidance
Narrated by Aisha (رضي الله عنها):
“The Prophet ﷺ would kiss and embrace his wives while fasting, but he had full control over his desires.”
(Sahih Bukhari: 1927, Sahih Muslim: 1106)
➌ Differentiating Between the Young and the Elderly
Narrated in Abu Dawud:
A man asked the Prophet ﷺ: "Is it permissible to kiss while fasting?"
He ﷺ replied:
"It is permissible for an elderly man, but for a young man, it may lead to danger."
(Abu Dawud: 2387)
This Hadith indicates that one’s self-control is the key factor. A youth with strong desires may be advised to avoid such acts to prevent falling into what would break the fast.
➍ What if Ejaculation Occurs?
- If a person kisses or hugs but does not ejaculate, the fast remains valid.
- If ejaculation (manī) occurs due to physical interaction, then the fast is invalid and qadāʾ (making up the fast) is obligatory.
- If sexual intercourse occurs during the fast, then:
➤ The fast is nullified,
➤ Qadāʾ is required, and
➤ Kaffārah is also mandatory:
- Either fasting two consecutive months, or
- Feeding sixty poor people.
(Sahih Bukhari: 1936)
➎ Summary of the Ruling
Permissible:
- If a husband kisses or embraces his wife with control, and no ejaculation or intercourse occurs, the fast remains valid.
Better to Avoid:
- If there is a risk of arousal or ejaculation, it is better to refrain from acts of intimacy during fasting hours.
Strictly Prohibited:
- Sexual intercourse during fasting hours is absolutely forbidden and incurs severe consequences, including kaffārah.
Conclusion
A person must assess their own ability to control desires. If physical affection may lead to what invalidates the fast, then it should be avoided out of precaution. The goal of fasting is not merely abstaining from food and drink, but also maintaining spiritual purity and self-restraint.
May Allah grant us strength to preserve the sanctity of our fasts. Āmīn.
