❖ Question

What is the ruling on kissing one’s own hand after shaking hands (musafahah)?

❖ Answer

الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!

Kissing one’s own hand after shaking hands has no basis in Shari‘ah.

◈ Scholarly Opinion

  • ʿAllamah Badr al-Din al-ʿAyni al-Hanafi (855 AH) رحمه الله said:
"What the ignorant people do — kissing their own hand after meeting others (through handshake) — is makruh (disliked), and there is no concession for it."
    (Minhat al-Suluk p. 415)

◈ Conclusion

  • Kissing one’s own hand after handshake is baseless and disliked.
  • It has no sanction in Islam, and scholars considered it a practice of the ignorant.
