Ruling on Joining the Imam in the Final Tashahhud or Waiting for a Second Congregation

Source: Fatāwā Arkān al-Islām

Question:

If a person enters the masjid while the imam is in the final tashahhud, should he join the congregation immediately or wait for a second congregation? Please provide a Sharʿī ruling.

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

1 – If there is hope for a second congregation:

If in the masjid or nearby there is a reasonable expectation of a second congregation being established:

◈ He should not join the first congregation.
◈ He should wait for the second congregation so that he can perform at least one full rakʿah with the imam.

2 – If there is no hope for a second congregation:

If there is no likelihood of another congregation being held:

◈ He should join the imam immediately, even if it is in the final tashahhud.
◈ Because participating in even a small portion of the congregational prayer is better than praying entirely alone.

Evidence from Ḥadīth:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«مَنْ أَدْرَكَ رَكْعَةً مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ فَقَدْ أَدْرَكَ الصَّلَاةَ»
“Whoever catches one rakʿah of the prayer has caught the prayer.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 580; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 607)

From this:

  • Catching at least one rakʿah means the person is counted as having joined the congregation.
  • If only tashahhud is caught, he is not considered to have caught the congregational prayer in the full sense.

Analogy with Jumuʿah:

Just as in Jumuʿah, at least one rakʿah must be caught for the prayer to be valid as Jumuʿah,
similarly, for the regular congregational prayer, catching one rakʿah is essential for it to count as joining the jamaʿah.

Practical Summary Table:
