Ruling on Istinja’ (Cleaning) After Urination

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

Is Istinja’ (cleaning with water) necessary after urination only?

❀ Answer:

✦ Yes, performing Istinja’ after urination is obligatory to ensure cleanliness and avoid impurity (najasah).
If Istinja’ is not performed, there is a high risk that urine drops or splashes may soil the clothing, and if clothing becomes impure, prayer will not be valid.

✿ Clarification:

  • It is not necessary to wash the entire private area after urination.
  • A brief Istinja’ is sufficient, meaning washing only the private organ (dhakar) from which urine was discharged is enough.
  • Washing the back passage (dubr) is not required after urination alone, unless stool is also passed.

✿ Importance of Cleanliness:

Negligence in cleaning after urination has been strictly warned against in Hadith:

The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Most of the punishment in the grave is due to urine (not guarding against its splashes)."
(Sahih Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Taharah)

✔ Summary:

Istinja’ is necessary after urination to avoid impurity.
Only the organ from which urine comes must be washed; washing the back passage is not necessary.
③ If urine soils clothing, prayer becomes invalid until the impurity is removed.
