Is Istinja’ (cleaning with water) necessary after urination only?
✦ Yes, performing Istinja’ after urination is obligatory to ensure cleanliness and avoid impurity (najasah).
If Istinja’ is not performed, there is a high risk that urine drops or splashes may soil the clothing, and if clothing becomes impure, prayer will not be valid.
Negligence in cleaning after urination has been strictly warned against in Hadith:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Most of the punishment in the grave is due to urine (not guarding against its splashes)."
(Sahih Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Taharah)
① Istinja’ is necessary after urination to avoid impurity.
② Only the organ from which urine comes must be washed; washing the back passage is not necessary.
③ If urine soils clothing, prayer becomes invalid until the impurity is removed.
