Ruling on a Used Impure Shoe Falling into a Well

Question:

If a used shoe falls into a well, and the quantity of water in the well is not much, what is the ruling?

❖ Answer:

If the shoe is impure (najis) and it falls into the well, then it becomes necessary to draw out all the water from the well. This is the ruling mentioned in the books of Islamic jurisprudence.

❖ Explanation:

✔ Effect of the Quantity of Water:

① If the water in the well is less than Qullatayn (approximately 200 kilograms or more), then the water becomes impure if something impure falls into it.

② However, if the water is Qullatayn or more, then the water does not become impure unless the effects of impurity—color, smell, or taste—appear in the water.

❖ Evidence:

The principle of Qullatayn is clarified in the books of Hadith, and the ruling is based on whether any effects of impurity are observed.
