Ruling on Giving the Adhan Without Wudu

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

Is it permissible to give the Adhan (call to prayer) without being in a state of Wudu?

❀ Answer:

✦ Yes, it is permissible to give the Adhan without Wudu.
There is no verse in the Qur’an or authentic Hadith from the Prophet ﷺ that mandates Wudu as a condition for giving the Adhan.

✿ Comparison with Qur’an Recitation:

Reciting the Qur’an without Wudu is permissible, and the Adhan is not more sacred than the Qur’an in terms of ritual purity requirements.
Thus, if the Qur’an can be recited without Wudu (except when touching the Mushaf), then the Adhan can certainly be given without it.

✿ Clarification:

Although being in a state of Wudu is preferable and recommended (mustahabb) when giving the Adhan due to its sacred nature, it is not obligatory.
Therefore, if someone gives the Adhan without Wudu, it is valid and acceptable, and no sin is incurred.

✔ Summary:

Wudu is not a condition for the validity of Adhan.
② It is permissible to give the Adhan without Wudu, although having Wudu is preferred.
No authentic text from Qur’an or Sunnah requires Wudu for Adhan.
