Ruling on Following a Person Holding Disbelief and Misguided Beliefs in Islam

Ruling on Following a Person Who Holds Misguided Beliefs

Issue: The Beliefs of Such a Person and the Ruling on Following Him

Question:
Respected scholars, it is humbly requested that you clarify the ruling regarding a person (referred to here as “Zaid”) who makes the following statements:

✿ He claims that the Prophet ﷺ misunderstood the meaning of Surah Al-Zalzalah.
✿ He says that ‘Isa عليه السلام was the son of Joseph the Carpenter.
✿ He states that the Prophet ﷺ knew nothing about Ibn Maryam (‘Isa عليه السلام) or the Dajjal.
✿ He claims that ‘Isa عليه السلام has passed away and that his grave is in Kashmir.
✿ He declares himself to be the “Promised Messiah” and says that no other ‘Isa will come.
✿ He says that Muhammad ﷺ was not “Khatam an-Nabiyyin” (Seal of the Prophets).
✿ He holds many other beliefs of a similar nature.

What is the ruling on following such a person in prayer? Is following him a means of salvation, or is it a cause of misguidance and punishment? What is the Islamic legal status of a person holding such beliefs? Kindly explain in detail so that the truth becomes clear.

Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

A person who holds the beliefs mentioned in the question has deviated from the fundamental tenets of Islam and has left the fold of Islam. Following such a person in prayer is pure misguidance and will be a cause of the punishment of Hellfire in the Hereafter.

The falsehood and misguidance of this person’s claims are evident from the following points:

➊ Accusing the Prophet ﷺ of Misunderstanding Surah Al-Zalzalah

This statement is pure blasphemy and disbelief, for the Qur’an clearly states:

﴿وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ، إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَى﴾
(The Prophet does not speak from his own desire; it is only revelation that is revealed to him.)

And Allah also says:

﴿ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُ﴾
(Then upon Us is its explanation and clarification.)

Thus, claiming that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ misunderstood the meaning of Surah Al-Zalzalah is, in reality, fabricating a lie against Allah.
We seek refuge with Allah from that.

➋ Claiming That ‘Isa عليه السلام Was the Son of Joseph the Carpenter

This belief is in direct contradiction to the clear verses of the Qur’an. Allah says:

This and other verses clearly prove that ‘Isa عليه السلام was born without a father. Whoever says otherwise rejects the Qur’an.

➌ Denying That Muhammad ﷺ Is Khatam an-Nabiyyin

Allah has explicitly stated:

﴿مَّا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَا أَحَدٍ مِّن رِّجَالِكُمْ وَلَٰكِن رَّسُولَ اللَّهِ وَخَاتَمَ النَّبِيِّينَ﴾
(Muhammad ﷺ is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets.)

Whoever rejects this after it has been clearly stated in the Qur’an is a disbeliever and outside the fold of Islam.

➍ Claiming That the Prophet ﷺ Knew Nothing About ‘Isa عليه السلام or the Dajjal

The Prophet ﷺ described in detail the descent of ‘Isa عليه السلام and the emergence of the Dajjal in authentic ahadith. These matters are well-documented in the books of Hadith, and there is consensus among the Muslim Ummah upon them. Denying them is rejecting the Sunnah.

➎ Claiming That ‘Isa عليه السلام Has Died and Is Buried in Kashmir

This belief contradicts the Qur’an and Hadith. The Prophet ﷺ informed of the ascension of ‘Isa عليه السلام to the heavens and his return before the Day of Judgment, which is established by mutawatir ahadith. Thus, claiming that he died and is buried in Kashmir is falsehood and misguidance.

➏ Declaring Oneself the “Promised Messiah”

This is an extremely misleading claim. It is not only an attempt to create fitnah in the Muslim Ummah but also an implicit claim of prophethood, which is disbelief. The Prophet ﷺ said:

«لَا نَبِيَّ بَعْدِي»
(There will be no prophet after me.)

Conclusion:

All the beliefs of such a person are false, corrupt, heretical, and based on disbelief. It is obligatory upon every Muslim to keep away from such a misguided, deceitful, lying, and apostate individual and to completely refrain from following him.
