Ruling on Flatulence During Prayer (Chronic Condition)

Taken from: "Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith", Volume 02

❀ Question:

If a person suffers from a condition that causes frequent flatulence (passing wind) during prayer, resulting in repeated nullification of wudūʾ (ablution), what is the ruling for such a person in prayer?

❀ Answer:

There are two scenarios to consider based on the frequency and timing of the condition:

◈ If there is a Sufficient Interval Between Episodes:

If the gap between each episode of wind passing is long enough to complete a full prayer (e.g., four rakʿahs) and even a little time remains, then:

✔ He should perform a fresh wudūʾ whenever wind passes.
✔ After every such occurrence, he must repeat his wudūʾ and pray again.

◈ If the Interval is Very Short:

If the condition recurs every few minutes (e.g., every five minutes), such that a complete prayer cannot be performed without the wind passing again:

✔ He should perform one wudūʾ for each obligatory prayer time, even if wind passes during the prayer.
✔ He should ignore the passing wind during that prayer and complete it.
✔ For the next prayer, he must renew his wudūʾ again at the start of the prayer time.

This is analogous to the rulings for a woman experiencing istihāḍah (non-menstrual vaginal bleeding), which is covered in Hadith.

✔ Summary:

Mild condition: Renew wudūʾ after each invalidation.
Severe/chronic condition: One wudūʾ per prayer time suffices, even if wind passes during prayer.
