Ruling on Fasting During Menstruation and Missed Fast Obligations

Rulings on Fasting and Qada During Menstruation

Source:
Fatawa Arkan-e-Islam

❀ Question:

A young girl began menstruating but, due to ignorance, continued to fast during her menstrual days. What is obligatory upon her now?

❀ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd:

It is obligatory upon this girl to make up (qadā) the fasts she kept while she was in the state of menstruation.
Fasting during menstruation is invalid and not accepted, even if done due to ignorance.

There is no fixed time limit for making up these fasts, meaning she may observe the qada whenever she gets the opportunity.

❖ Another Scenario:

If the girl's menstruation had begun, but out of modesty she did not inform her family and also did not fast during those days, then:

She is still obligated to make up those missed fasts.

❖ Important Principle:

Once a girl begins menstruating, all the rulings of Shari'ah become applicable to her, since menstruation is a sign of puberty.
