Question:
What is the ruling on a person who falsely claims revelation after the Prophet ﷺ, in the light of Qur’an and the consensus of the Ummah?
Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri
Answer:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the Final Prophet and Messenger. His Sharīʿah is the final Sharīʿah, his Book is the final Book, his Ummah is the final Ummah, and the chain of revelation (waḥy) ended with his death. After him, no revelation related to religion will ever descend. Whoever claims revelation after him is a liar and a fabricator, and no proof is to be sought for his false claim.
Qur’ānic Evidence:
❀ Allah Almighty says:
(Sūrah al-Anʿām: 93)
“And who is more unjust than he who invents a lie against Allah, or says: ‘It has been revealed to me,’ while nothing has been revealed to him?”
Scholarly Statements:
❀ Imām Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī رحمه الله (310 AH):
He explained that this verse covers all false claimants of revelation, such as Ibn Abī Sarḥ (who apostatized), Musaylimah al-Kadhdhāb, and al-Aswad al-ʿAnsī, all of whom falsely claimed that Allah revealed to them. Every person who makes such a claim—whether in that era or any later time—falls under this verse.
(Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī, 9/407)
“There is consensus that the Sharīʿah of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ will remain until the Day of Judgment, because Allah said: But he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets.”
(Rusūkh al-Aḥbār, 132)
❀ Shaykh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Nāṣir al-Saʿdī رحمه الله (1376 AH):
He stated that the greatest oppression is to falsely attribute a statement or ruling to Allah, and this includes the false claim of prophethood and revelation. Such a liar not only fabricates against Allah but also misleads people, seeks to impose his false claim on them, and deems the blood and wealth of his opponents lawful. Therefore, every false claimant of prophethood—including Musaylimah, al-Aswad al-ʿAnsī, al-Mukhtār al-Thaqafī, and others—falls under this verse.
(Tafsīr al-Saʿdī, 264)

- The chain of revelation ended with the death of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
- Whoever claims to receive revelation after him is a liar, fabricator, and among the greatest oppressors, as affirmed by the Qur’an and the consensus of the Ummah.
