Ruling on Facing the Qiblah During Adhan and Iqamah

Ruling on Facing the Qiblah During Adhān and Iqāmah

Question:
Is it obligatory to face the Qiblah while giving the Adhān (call to prayer) and Iqāmah (second call before starting Salah)?

Answer by Shaykh Abdul Wakeel Nasir حفظه الله

Facing the Qiblah during Adhān and Iqāmah is not obligatory. However, it is considered a Sunnah in the sense of recommendation (mustaḥabb) — meaning, it is preferable and encouraged to do so, though not mandatory.

This is also the position held by scholars and jurists, as mentioned in their fatāwā.

Summary:

✔ Facing the Qiblah during Adhān and Iqāmah is not a requirement
✔ It is recommended (Sunnah Mustaḥabbah) and considered good practice
✔ The validity of Adhān or Iqāmah does not depend on facing the Qiblah
