Ruling on Eating Garlic Before Prayer and Attending the Mosque

❖ Is Eating Garlic Disliked in Islam? ❖

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

Question:

Is eating garlic considered disliked (makrūh)?

Answer:

Eating raw garlic and onions is permissible. However, when it is time for prayer, one should avoid eating them, as the Prophet ﷺ forbade those who had eaten raw garlic or onions from coming to the mosque. This is because it causes discomfort to both the worshippers and the angels.

❀ ʿAllāmah Kirmānī al-Ḥanafī رحمه الله (d. 786H) said:
أجمع العلماء على إباحة أكله.
“The scholars are unanimous that eating garlic is permissible.”
(Sharḥ al-Kirmānī: 16/101)

✅ Conclusion:
Garlic is lawful to eat, but one must refrain from attending the mosque after consuming it raw, to avoid harming fellow worshippers and angels.
