Ruling on Fulfilling Needs After Adhān During Fard and Nafl Fasts
✍ Fatwa by: Ḥāfiẓ Khidr Ḥayāt ḥafiẓahullāh
Is it permissible to fulfill a need (such as eating or drinking) after the start of the adhān during a nafl (voluntary) fast, just as it is in the case of a fard (obligatory) fast?
✔ Yes, it is permissible.
There is no distinction between an obligatory and a voluntary fast with regard to:
◈ The starting and ending time of the fast
◈ The restrictions (muḥarramāt) associated with fasting
◈ The conditions of validity
As with fard fasts, once the time of Fajr begins (i.e., adhān is called), one must stop eating and drinking, regardless of whether the fast is fard or nafl.
✔ In both fard and nafl fasts, the same rulings apply with respect to when the fast begins and what nullifies it.
✔ Therefore, no need (e.g., eating, drinking) can be fulfilled after the adhān of Fajr begins.
