Ruling on a Mosquito Falling into Milk: Is Drinking Permissible?
Source: Fatāwā ʿUlamāʾ Ahl al-Ḥadīth
❖ Question
If a mosquito falls into milk, can it still be consumed?
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!
Yes, the milk may be consumed. There is no harm in drinking it; the milk remains pure and does not become impure (najis).
Although there is no explicit text regarding mosquitoes, wasps, ants, or fireflies, the Prophet ﷺ instructed regarding a fly that falls into food: it should be fully dipped and then removed, and the food or drink may be used.
Since a fly — which is larger than a mosquito — does not render food impure, then likewise, if a mosquito falls into milk, the milk remains pure and permissible to drink.
✿ Reasoning and Principle
- Flies do not contain dam masfūḥ (flowing blood in veins). The Qur’an has only declared dam masfūḥ impermissible.
- Therefore, the fall of a fly does not make food or drink impure.
- By the same principle, mosquitoes, ants, fireflies, wasps, and similar small creatures are included, as they also do not contain dam masfūḥ.
◈ Conclusion
If a mosquito falls into milk, the milk is not rendered impure and drinking it is permissible.
