❀ Ruling on Donating an Undesired Gift from a Sinful Past ❀
This response is taken from the fatwas compiled in the book “500 Questions and Answers for Women,” translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.
I used to live in a mixed-gender society. During that time, a man gave me an expensive gold necklace as a gift with sinful intentions. Alḥamdulillāh, I have now left that environment, recognized the truth, and deeply regret my past actions.
Do I have any right over this gift?
Is it permissible for me to wear it, or should I give it in charity?
I now completely detest that former society, so returning the gift is not an option. What should I do?
Praise Allah for safeguarding your honor and dignity and guiding you to the path of righteousness.
As for the gift in question, do not return it to the giver, especially since returning it is impractical and may revive past connections.
Instead, the best course of action is:
Donate it in charity (ṣadaqah).
This way, you purify your wealth and conscience from any trace of sin attached to it.
