If a person stays awake the whole night and performs the Fajr prayer only after its time has ended, is such a prayer accepted? And what is the ruling regarding his other prayers that he performs on time?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
If a person delays the Fajr prayer until its time has ended — despite being able to perform it on time, for example by sleeping earlier at night — then his prayer will not be accepted. This is because he has delayed it without a valid Sharīʿah excuse, and such an act is rejected.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"مَنْ عَمِلَ عَمَلًا لَیْسَ عَلَیْہِ أَمْرُنَا فَہُوَ رَدٌّ"
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, al-Aqḍiyah, Bāb Naqḍ al-Aḥkām al-Bāṭilah, ḥadīth: 1718)
Translation:
"Whoever performs an action that is not in accordance with our command, it is rejected."
One who deliberately delays prayer beyond its time without any excuse is doing something that Allah ﷻ and His Messenger ﷺ did not command, and therefore it is rejected.
If the excuse presented is:
"I am asleep at the time of Fajr,"
then the answer is that the Prophet ﷺ said:
"مَنْ نَامَ عَنْ صَلَاةٍ أَوْ نَسِيهَا فَلْيُصَلِّهَا إِذَا ذَكَرَهَا، لَا كَفَّارَةَ لَهَا إِلَّا ذَلِكَ"
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, al-Mawāqīt, ḥadīth: 597; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, al-Masājid, ḥadīth: 684)
Translation:
"Whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, let him pray it when he remembers; there is no expiation for it except that."
A person could have avoided missing Fajr by:
✿ Sleeping early at night to wake up on time.
✿ Using an alarm clock.
✿ Asking someone to wake him up at the correct time.
If he neglected these means and missed the prayer, it will be considered intentional delay, and the prayer will not be accepted.
All other prayers that he performs within their prescribed times will, in shāʾ Allāh, be accepted.
A Muslim must worship Allah ﷻ in the manner that pleases Him. The purpose of creation is to worship Allah ﷻ, and one never knows when death will arrive, after which there will be no opportunity for deeds.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"اِذَا مَاتَ الإِنْسَانُ انْقَطَعَ عَنْهُ عَمَلُهُ إِلَّا مِنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ: صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ، أَوْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ، أَوْ وَلَدٍ صَالِحٍ يَدْعُو لَهُ"
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, al-Waṣiyyah, ḥadīth: 1631)
Translation:
"When a person dies, all his deeds come to an end except three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him."
