Ruling on Dancing in Ecstasy During a Na'at Gathering

Source: Shumara al-Sunnah, Jhelum

❖ Question:

What is the ruling on organizing a Na'at gathering and entering into a state of ecstatic dancing during the event?

❖ Answer:

This is a practice adopted from Sufis. While mentioning and praising the Prophet ﷺ is a legitimate and commendable act in Islam, it is essential to observe the etiquettes laid down by the Prophet ﷺ himself.

❖ Scholarly Verdict:

📚 Fatawa ‘Alamgiri states:
“The actions of those who claim ‘ecstasy and love’ have no basis. Sufis should be prohibited from raising their voices and tearing their clothes, as mentioned in al-Sirajiyyah.”
[Fatawa ‘Alamgiri: 5/319]

❖ Summary:

✔ Mentioning the virtues of the Prophet ﷺ is permissible and encouraged.
✘ However, actions such as dancing, shouting, or tearing clothes in the name of spiritual ecstasy have no basis in Islam.
✘ These acts are innovations (bid‘ah) and resemble Sufi customs, which are not supported by the Qur’an or Sunnah.
