Ruling on Congregational Prayer When Imam’s Wudu Breaks

Source: Fatawa of Ahl-e-Hadith Scholars, Kitab al-Salah, Volume 1, Page 247

❖ Question:

If the Imam is leading a congregational prayer and his wudu breaks, what should be done? Can he perform ablution and then resume the prayer from where he left off?

❖ Answer:

If the Imam's wudu breaks, then there are two possible scenarios:

If there is another person available who is capable of leading the prayer, he may step forward and complete the Salah as the new Imam.

If no other person is present to lead the prayer, then the Imam along with all the followers should end the prayer by saying Salam. Afterwards, the Imam should perform wudu again, and then restart the Salah from the beginning and establish the congregation anew.
