Ruling on Completing Missed Pebbles in Ramy Without Repeating All Throws

If Some Pebbles Do Not Fall into the Basin During Ramy — What Should Be Done?

Question

If during Ramy, one or two out of the seven pebbles do not fall into the basin, and a day or two has passed, does the stoning of that Jamrah need to be repeated?
If repetition is required, must the previously thrown pebbles also be thrown again?

Answer

Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

Ruling According to the Fuqahāʾ

❀ If the missed pebbles were the last pebbles for that Jamrah, then only those missed pebbles need to be thrown to complete the number.
❀ The previously thrown pebbles do not need to be thrown again.

❀ If the missed pebbles were not the last ones, the Fuqahāʾ say:

  • It is not enough to just throw the missed pebbles;
  • One must also throw all the pebbles that come after them to maintain the sequence (tartīb).

The Stronger Opinion

In my view, the correct opinion is:
❀ Only the number of pebbles missed should be completed.
❀ It is not obligatory to throw the later pebbles again.

Reason:
❀ If the sequence is broken due to ignorance (jahl) or forgetfulness (nisyān), the requirement of sequence is waived.
❀ For example, if someone throws the second pebble thinking the first one was not required, this is due to ignorance or forgetfulness.

Therefore:
❀ We tell such a person — just complete the missing pebbles, and there is no need to repeat the rest.

Important Clarification

❀ Pebbles must be thrown into the basin area where the stones are collected.
❀ The pillar (Jamrah) is only a marker; hitting it directly is not required.
❀ Therefore:

  • If someone throws pebbles into the basin without hitting the pillar, the Ramy is still valid.

ھذا ما عندي والله أعلم بالصواب
(This is my opinion, and Allah knows best what is correct.)
