Ruling on Children Listening to Religious Songs

Source:
This content is derived from the book 500 Questions and Answers for Women, which contains fatwas by the scholars of the Haramain. The book has been translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

❖ Question:

Previously, we inquired from you regarding listening to songs, and your response was that undoubtedly, listening to shameless and immoral songs is haram.
Now the question is:
What is the ruling on listening to religious and patriotic songs, as well as songs for children and Eid Milad an-Nabi?
It should be noted that these songs are accompanied by musical instruments, whether broadcasted on radio or television.

❖ Answer:

Musical instruments are categorically haram.
When religious songs, patriotic anthems, or children's songs are accompanied by music, they become haram.

As for Eid Milad an-Nabi, it is in itself a bid‘ah (innovation), and attending or participating in it is haram.

Songs and anthems accompanied by music fall under prohibition, supported by the statement of the Prophet ﷺ:

"ليكونن من أمتي أقوام يستحلون الحر والحرير والخمر والمعازف..."
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ḥadīth no. 5268]

"There will be among my Ummah people who will deem lawful fornication, silk, wine, and musical instruments..."

This narration has been recorded by Imam al-Bukhari in his Sahih.
There are also other authentic Ahadith on this subject that confirm the same meaning.
