Ruling on Carrying Qur'an or Duʿā' Booklets into the Toilet

❀ Question:​


If a person has in their pocket a booklet containing the Name of Allah, a Sūrah from the Qur’an, or a collection of supplications, is it permissible for them to enter the toilet to urinate or relieve themselves? It is also noted that the narration about the Prophet ﷺ removing his ring before entering the toilet is weak.


The Answer:


All praise is due to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:


The Report About Removing the Ring Is Weak and Rejected


The narration which mentions that the Prophet ﷺ used to remove his ring before entering the toilet is weak (ḍaʿīf) and munkar.

✦ Ruling on Carrying a Sūrah or Duʿā' Book into the Toilet​


In this matter, ijtihād (scholarly discretion) is applicable.


However, it is preferable that anything containing the Qur’an or sacred phrases be placed in a safe and respectable location before entering the toilet, to uphold their sanctity and honor.

وَاللّٰهُ أَعْلَمُ بِالصَّوَاب


✔ Summary:​


① The narration about the Prophet ﷺ removing his ring before using the toilet is weak and not reliable.
② It is best to avoid taking the Qur’an, its verses, or items bearing Allah’s Name into the toilet.
③ Such sacred items should be left in a secure and respectful place before entering.
