Ruling on Calling the Adhan Before Fajr

In Islamic tradition, calling the Adhan (call to prayer) before the actual time of Fajr is permissible. This practice serves to awaken individuals for pre-dawn worship, such as Tahajjud (night prayer), and to prepare for the upcoming Fajr prayer.

Purpose of the Pre-Fajr Adhan

The primary objective of the pre-Fajr Adhan is not to signal the commencement of the Fajr prayer time but to alert and awaken those who are asleep, encouraging them to engage in voluntary night prayers and to prepare for the obligatory Fajr prayer. This early call acts as a spiritual reminder and facilitates timely worship.

Applicability Beyond Ramadan

While the practice is notably observed during Ramadan to assist in waking for Suhoor (pre-dawn meal), it is not confined to this month. The pre-Fajr Adhan can be employed throughout the year, serving the same purpose of awakening and preparation for early morning worship.

Summary

  • Permissibility: Calling the Adhan before Fajr is permissible in Islam.
  • Purpose: It serves to awaken individuals for night prayers and to prepare for the Fajr prayer.
  • Year-Round Practice: This practice is applicable both during Ramadan and in other months.

This tradition underscores the importance Islam places on timely and conscious worship, facilitating believers in their spiritual routines.
