❖ Question:

What is the Islamic ruling on engaging in business or trade after the second Adhān (call to prayer) of Jumuʿah (Friday)?

✿ Answer:

Engaging in business after the second Adhān of Jumuʿah is ḥarām (prohibited).

❖ Evidence from the Qur’ān:

﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَذَرُوا البَيْعَ ذَلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ﴾
“O you who believe! When the call is proclaimed for the prayer on the day of Jumuʿah (Friday), hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade. That is better for you if you only knew.”
📖 (Sūrah al-Jumuʿah: 9)

❀ Explanation by Scholars:

✅ Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr رحمه الله (774 AH) wrote:

“The scholars are unanimously agreed that engaging in trade after the second Adhān (of Jumuʿah) is prohibited.”
📚 (Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr: 8/122)

✅ Conclusion:

✔ After the second Adhān, which occurs once the Khaṭīb ascends the pulpit, it is obligatory to cease all trade and business activities.
✔ Failing to do so constitutes a sin, as per Qur’anic injunction and the consensus of scholars.
✔ Muslims are commanded to immediately attend the Jumuʿah sermon and prayer, leaving behind all worldly engagements.
