Ruling on an Imām Leading Prayer Without Wudu’ and Its Effect on the Followers

Question​

If the Imām leads the congregation in prayer and then realizes afterward that he was without wudu’, will the followers’ prayers be valid or not? Should the Imām repeat his prayer, or must the followers also repeat theirs?

Answer​

There are two main scholarly positions:
Imams Mālik, Shāfiʿī, and Aḥmad’s View (Raʾy al-Ashabath-Thalāthah):
  • Followers’ Prayers Are Valid. Only the Imām’s prayer is invalid and must be repeated.
  • Evidence: Ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) in which the Prophet ﷺ said:

    "يُصَلُّونَ بِكُمْ فَإِنْ صَلُّوا فَلَكُمْ وَلَهُمْ، وَإِنْ أَخْطَأوا فَلَكُمْ، وَلَهُمْ الْعِوَضُ."
    (Ahmad, Bukhārī)
    “They lead you in prayer: if they pray correctly, it is for you and for them; if they err, it is for you, and the burden of error is upon them.”

  • Supporting Reports:
    • Imām ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه) once led prayer in a state of impurity without realizing it; the congregation did not repeat their prayer.
    • Similar incidents are reported for ʿUthmān (رضي الله عنه) and ʿAlī (رضي الله عنه).
  • Ibn al-Mundhir’s Commentary: This ḥadīth refutes those who claim that the invalidity of the Imām’s prayer invalidates the followers’ prayers as well.

Imām Abū Ḥanīfah’s View:
  • Both Imām and Followers’ Prayers Are Invalid. All must repeat their prayers.
  • Evidence: Ḥadīth, “Imām is trustee and the mu’adhdhīn is a trust-bearer.”

Conclusion​

The position of the three Imāms (Mālik, Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad) is stronger: the followers’ prayers remain valid, and only the Imām must repeat the prayer.
