Ruling on an Employee Sleeping During Duty Hours While Fasting

❖ Question:

An employee asks: On several occasions, I slept during my working hours by abandoning my assigned duties. Does this invalidate my fast?

Answer:

His fast is not invalidated, because there is no direct connection between abandoning work and the validity of the fast.

However, a person entrusted with a responsibility must fulfill the duty assigned to him, since he receives wages or a salary for it. Therefore, just as he takes full pay, he is obliged to perform the work fully and discharge his responsibility properly.

Nevertheless, due to this prohibited act of sleeping during duty hours, the reward of his fast may be diminished.
