The Ruling on Accepting the Invitation of a Person with Haram Earnings

Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil, Vol. 1, Page 448

❖ Question

If a person’s business is based on interest or any other unlawful (ḥarām) source, should one accept food and drink at his invitation, since his income is ḥarām?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

No, it is not appropriate to accept the invitation of such a person. The reason is that interest (ribā) is ḥarām, as Allah Almighty has declared:

﴿وَحَرَّمَ الرِّبَا﴾
(Translation: “And Allah has prohibited interest.”)

When a person’s source of income is ḥarām, especially from an explicitly prohibited trade such as ribā, then because his wealth is tainted with ḥarām, one should abstain from consuming food and drink provided by him.
