Ruling on Accepting Gifts Meant as Help Without Greed or Expectation

Islamic Ruling on Accepting a Gift Given with the Intention of Help
Fatwa by the Saudi Permanent Committee for Islamic Rulings
Fatwa No: 7932

Accepting a Gift Meant as Assistance

If a gift is offered with the intention of helping the recipient, then:

✔ There is no harm in accepting such a gift, provided:

  • One’s heart is free from greed or desire for it.
  • The soul does not long for it.
  • There is no ulterior expectation or material craving for the gift.

🌿 When such a gift is accepted:

  • It is commendable to repay the giver with a similar or suitable return whenever possible.
  • If this is not feasible, then supplication (duʿā') should be made for the giver.

🕋 The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever does good to you, reward him. If you have nothing to give, then pray for him until you think you have repaid him.”
📝 [Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Hadith 1672]

📌 Note:
This ruling encourages sincerity in accepting help, without falling into material dependence or worldly expectation.
