Islamic Ruling on Accepting a Gift Given with the Intention of Help

Fatwa No: 7932
If a gift is offered with the intention of helping the recipient, then:
✔ There is no harm in accepting such a gift, provided:
When such a gift is accepted:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever does good to you, reward him. If you have nothing to give, then pray for him until you think you have repaid him.”
[Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Hadith 1672]
Note:
This ruling encourages sincerity in accepting help, without falling into material dependence or worldly expectation.

❖ Accepting a Gift Meant as Assistance
If a gift is offered with the intention of helping the recipient, then:
✔ There is no harm in accepting such a gift, provided:
- One’s heart is free from greed or desire for it.
- The soul does not long for it.
- There is no ulterior expectation or material craving for the gift.

- It is commendable to repay the giver with a similar or suitable return whenever possible.
- If this is not feasible, then supplication (duʿā') should be made for the giver.

“Whoever does good to you, reward him. If you have nothing to give, then pray for him until you think you have repaid him.”
