Ruling on a Rakʿah Without Reciting Sūrah al-Fātiḥah

Ruling on Missing the Recitation of Sūrah al-Fātiḥah in a Rakʿah

Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

What is the ruling on a rakʿah in which Sūrah al-Fātiḥah is not recited?

❖ Answer:

Reciting Sūrah al-Fātiḥah in every rakʿah of the prayer is essential for the Imam, the follower (muqtadī), and the individual (munfarid).

If Sūrah al-Fātiḥah is not recited in any rakʿah, that rakʿah is invalid and must be repeated.

Scholarly Explanations

Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr (رحمه الله, d. 463H) said:

فيه من الفقه إبطال الركعة التى لا يقرأ فيها بأم القرآن.

“This narration establishes the juristic ruling that the rakʿah in which Sūrah al-Fātiḥah is not recited is invalid.”
(al-Istidhkār: 1/446)

Imām Ibn Ḥibbān (رحمه الله) said:

الأمر بقراءة فاتحة الكتاب فى الصلاة أمر فرض، قامت الدلالة من أخبار أخر على صحة فرضيته، ذكرناها فى غير موضع من كتبنا والأمر بقراءة ما تيسر غير فرض، دل الإجماع على ذلك .

“The command to recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah in prayer is a command of obligation (farḍ). Other narrations also establish the obligation of its recitation, which we have mentioned in different places in our works. The command to recite anything beyond al-Fātiḥah, however, is not obligatory; consensus proves this.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān, under ḥadīth: 1790)

✅ Conclusion:
The recitation of Sūrah al-Fātiḥah is obligatory in every rakʿah. Missing it invalidates that rakʿah, which must then be repeated.
