❖ Question
When the first row has already been completed, what should a worshipper who arrives later do?
Should he stand alone behind the row or pull someone from the front row?
Which position is closest to the truth (aqrabu ilā al-ṣawāb)? Please explain.
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!
If a person comes to the mosque and the first row is already full:
- He should stand alone behind the row.
- If later another worshipper joins him, that is good (fa-bihā).
- But if no one joins him, then whatever rakʿāt he prayed alone must be repeated.
◈ Evidence from Ḥadīth
The Prophet ﷺ clearly stated:
«مَنْ صَلّٰی خَلْفَ الصَّفِّ وَحْدَہٗ فَلْیُعِدْ صَلاَتَہٗ»
(Tirmidhī, Abū Dāwūd, Abwāb al-Ṣufūf, Bāb al-Rajul Yuṣallī Waḥdahu Khalf al-Ṣaff)
"Whoever prays alone behind the row should repeat his prayer."
This is an explicit proof that if someone prays alone behind the row, he must repeat his Salah.
◈ Regarding Pulling Someone from the Row
The narration about pulling someone from the front row is weak (ḍaʿīf).
Moreover, this act goes against the following authentic guidance of the Prophet ﷺ:
"Complete the first rows, and let any deficiency be in the last row."
This means the Sharīʿah instructs us to complete the front rows, and if there is a shortage, it should remain in the last row — not by pulling someone back from the row ahead.
◈ Conclusion (Aqrabu ilā al-Ṣawāb)
The most correct and nearest to the truth is that:
❀ The worshipper should pray alone behind the row if necessary.
❀ If another person joins him, the prayer is valid.
❀ If no one joins him, then he must repeat his Salah.
❀ Pulling someone from the front row is not correct, because the report is weak and it contradicts authentic ḥadīth.
