Ruling on a Follower Reciting Takbirs and Other Supplications Behind the Imam During Salah

Answer by: Fadhilat al-Shaykh Abdul Wakeel Nasir ḥafiẓahullah

❖ Question:

What is the ruling regarding a follower (muqtadi) reciting takbirat, tasbihat, and other supplications during Salah behind the Imam?

Answer:

While in Salah, it is obligatory upon the follower to personally recite takbirat, tasbihat, thana, and Surah Al-Fatihah, whether he is praying behind an Imam or alone.

✔ Key Points to Note:

① The follower must individually recite all the obligatory supplications such as:

  • Transitional Takbirs (تکبیراتِ انتقالی)
  • Tasbihat of Ruku and Sujood (تسبیحاتِ رکوع و سجدہ)
  • Thana (ثناء)
  • Surah Al-Fatihah (سورۃ الفاتحہ)

② These acts should be done while following the Imam, but personal recitation is essential for the completion of one's Salah.

❖ Summary:

The follower is required to personally perform all the essential supplications during Salah, even when praying behind an Imam. These utterances are individually obligatory upon each follower despite being in congregation.
