Ruling for a Menstruating Woman Who Leaves Makkah Without Performing ʿUmrah

What Should a Woman Do If She Gets Menstruation After Assuming Ihrām for ʿUmrah?
Source: Fatāwā Arkan-e-Islam

Question

If a woman assumes Ihrām for ʿUmrah but then starts menstruating and leaves Makkah without performing the ʿUmrah, what is the ruling in such a case?

Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

When a woman assumes Ihrām for ʿUmrah and then begins menstruating, the following points should be kept in mind:

✿ Key Rulings

The occurrence of menstruation does not invalidate the Ihrām. Her Ihrām remains valid and in effect.

❀ Since she assumed the Ihrām for ʿUmrah but left Makkah without performing it, she is still considered to be in the state of Ihrām.

❀ Therefore, it becomes obligatory for her to return to Makkah and:

◈ Perform Ṭawāf,
◈ Perform Saʿī,
◈ And carry out Taqṣīr (cutting a small portion of her hair),
◈ So that she may exit the state of Ihrām lawfully.

✿ Prohibitions During Ihrām

Until the ʿUmrah is completed, the following acts remain prohibited in the state of Ihrām:

Using fragrance is not allowed,
Cutting hair or nails is forbidden,
Marital relations (for married women) are impermissible.

An Important Concession

If a woman anticipates that her menstruation may begin, she may make a conditional statement at the time of assuming Ihrām:

“Wherever I am prevented (due to some hindrance), there I will become free from Ihrām.”

❀ If she includes this condition and then discontinues the Ihrām later due to menstruation, nothing will be obligatory upon her, and she may lawfully exit the state of Ihrām.
