✘ A lack of reverence for the sanctity of prohibitions,
✘ Absence of fear of Allah,
✘ Neglect of His surveillance, and
✘ Disregard for light punishments such as flogging or brief imprisonment.
Thus, strict punishments become necessary to:
✔ Deter further violations,
✔ Prevent habitual offenses,
✔ Or to achieve other legitimate objectives —
→ even if the punishment escalates to capital punishment.
The Prophet ﷺ said regarding repeated wine consumption:
“If he drinks (wine), flog him. If he drinks again, flog him again. And if he drinks a fourth time, then kill him.”
[Sunan An-Nasa’i, Hadith No. 5661]
This is a sound and well-established Hadith.
Likewise, the following individuals are deserving of severe punishment:
➤ One who repeatedly promotes intoxicants,
➤ A married adulterer,
➤ One who unjustly kills a free Muslim,
➤ A recurring apostate,
➤ And anyone who reviles Allah, His Messenger, His religion, His Book, or His Shari‘ah.
And Allah knows best.
