Rights of Others (Huquq al-Ibad)

Written by: Fadheelat Ash-Sheikh Hafiz Abdul Sattar Al-Hammad (may Allah preserve him)

Hadith:

"Oppression will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection." [Sahih Bukhari, Book of Oppression: 2447]

Benefits:

The oppression (Zulm) a person commits will manifest as multiple forms of darkness on the Day of Judgment. This happens because, firstly, a person unlawfully seizes the rights of others, and secondly, they defy Allah by disobeying His commands. Such an offense is far graver than other sins. Therefore, an oppressor must seek to rectify their wrongdoings in this world; otherwise, the matter will become extremely dire on the Day of Judgment.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

"Whoever has wronged another person regarding their honor or anything else should seek forgiveness today, before the Day comes when there will be no dinars or dirhams (money for compensation). If the oppressor has good deeds, they will be taken in proportion to the injustice they committed. If they have no good deeds, then the sins of the one wronged will be placed on the oppressor." [Sahih Bukhari, Book of Oppression: 2429]

This matter is further clarified in another Hadith where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

"The bankrupt person from my Ummah will be the one who comes on the Day of Resurrection with prayer, fasting, and charity, but also comes having insulted someone, slandered someone, unlawfully consumed someone’s wealth, shed someone's blood, or struck someone. As a result, their good deeds will be given to those they wronged. If their good deeds are exhausted before justice is fulfilled, then the sins of those they wronged will be placed upon them, and eventually, they will be thrown into Hellfire." [Sahih Muslim, Book of Virtue, Enjoining Good Manners, and Joining of the Ties of Kinship: 2581]

Conclusion:

It is clear from these narrations that violating the rights of others is a grave sin. Those who commit such injustices should hasten to seek forgiveness and make amends in this life. Otherwise, the consequences on the Day of Judgment will be severe, as people's good deeds will be taken away and their sins will be placed upon the oppressors. May Allah protect us from such a fate.
