Is there a reward for the steps taken while returning home after offering Salah in the mosque, just as there is reward for walking towards the mosque?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾAmma baʿd!
◈ Yes, just as every step taken towards the mosque earns reward, every step taken while returning from the mosque after Salah also brings reward.
❀ Sayyidunā Ubayy ibn Kaʿb (رضي الله عنه) narrates:
There was a man whose house was the farthest from the mosque among all the people I knew, yet he never missed a prayer in congregation. Someone suggested to him (or I did), “Why don’t you buy a donkey to ride during the darkness or in intense heat?”
He replied, “I would not like my house to be next to the mosque. I want that my steps toward the mosque and my return to my family be written as reward for me.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah has gathered all of that reward for you.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 663)
❀ Ḥāfiẓ Nawawī (رحمه الله) (d. 676 AH) said:
“This Hadith proves that reward is written for every step taken when returning from the mosque, just as it is written for the steps taken when going to the mosque.”
(Sharḥ al-Nawawī ʿalā Muslim, 5/168)
◈ Every step taken both to and from the mosque for Salah earns reward.
◈ The intention and love for worship enhances one’s reward in the sight of Allah ﷻ.
