Revolutionary Moments That Changed the Destiny of the Arabs

By: Hamid Kamaluddin

If someone had seen the Arabs just a few years before the Prophet ﷺ, could they ever imagine that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه—chief of Banū Makhzūm and a champion of the fairs of ʿUkāẓ—would one day honor an Abyssinian slave Bilāl رضي الله عنه by saying:

"هٰذَا سَيِّدُنَا أَعْتَقَهُ سَيِّدُنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ!"
"This is our master, who was freed by our master, Abū Bakr!"

What a remarkable scene! A fragrant flower blooming in the midst of a barren desert. What was the source of this miraculous transformation? Which blessed personality's teachings made this infertile land so fruitful?

❖ Reforming Pre-Islamic Arab Customs

Who was it that eradicated the barbaric custom of burying innocent daughters alive?

Just two verses of the Qur’an revolutionized Arab society. When they were recited, they shook consciences and left sinners in tears:

"وَإِذَا الْمَوْؤُودَةُ سُئِلَتْ • بِأَيِّ ذَنبٍ قُتِلَتْ"
(At-Takwīr: 8-9)
"And when the buried-alive girl will be asked: For what sin was she killed?"

❖ Restoring Women’s Rights

There was a time when women were seen as weak and treated as property. But who granted them inheritance rights?

"لِّلرِّجَالِ نَصِيبٌ... وَلِلنِّسَاءِ نَصِيبٌ..."
(An-Nisāʾ: 7)
"For men is a share of what parents and close relatives leave, and for women is a share as well—whether small or large."

Once considered property themselves, women were now given property rights—because a Prophet had been raised among them.

❖ Abolishing Barbaric Practices

In pre-Islamic ignorance, sons would avoid their mothers but hasten to seize their deceased father’s wives. Yet, the Prophet ﷺ never got angry for personal reasons—only for the sake of Allah. And then came Allah's decree:

"وَلاَ تَنكِحُواْ مَا نَكَحَ آبَاؤُكُم..."
(An-Nisāʾ: 22)
"And do not marry those women whom your fathers married..."

❖ Introducing Social Ethics

In a society where blood was shed over pennies and robbery was rampant, the Qur’an instilled new ethical standards:

Surah An-Nūr (61) allowed Muslims to eat in various relatives’ and friends' homes without guilt—promoting social cohesion and trust.

❖ Nurturing Faith and Trust

The Prophet ﷺ cultivated such God-consciousness that even entering a relative’s house or sharing meals was governed by ethical concern and mutual respect.

❖ The New Face of Arabia

"هُوَ الَّذِي بَعَثَ فِي الْأُمِّيِّينَ رَسُولًا..."
(Al-Jumuʿah: 2)
"He is the One who sent among the unlettered people a Messenger from themselves..."

Through the Prophet ﷺ, a nation once steeped in darkness became beacons of guidance.

❖ Global Recognition of the Prophet’s Reforms

Ahmad Ḥasan az-Zayyāt, a renowned Arab intellectual, wrote:
"Before the Prophet’s advent, the notion of freedom was buried. He revived it. He awakened intellect and moral consciousness. Under his teachings, people of different colors and origins united in righteousness and piety."

❖ Timeless Integrity in the Prophet’s Seerah

After the Treaty of Ḥudaybiyyah, when Islam entered its phase of conquests, the Prophet’s strategy and sincerity were clear to all. When the sun eclipsed the day of his son Ibrāhīm’s death, he clarified:

"These are signs of Allah; they do not eclipse due to anyone's death or birth..."
(Al-Bukhārī, narrated by ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās: 3692)

❖ The True Legacy of Prophethood

Every transformation—from tribal warfare to brotherhood, from oppression to justice, from ignorance to divine knowledge—was the result of the Prophet’s ﷺ guidance and divine revelation.

This is the story of how the Prophet ﷺ and the Qur’an transformed a disjointed desert people into a united, enlightened civilization—one whose impact endures across the world to this day.
