❀ The Solitary Narration of Waleed ibn Jami‘ and Its Scholarly Resolution ❀
Adapted from: Fatawa Shaykh al-Hadith Mubarakpuri, Vol. 1, Page 145
What is the explanation and scholarly resolution of the statement:
"يتفرد من الثقات بمالا يشبه حديث الثقات"
mentioned in ‘Awn al-Ma‘bood, Volume 4, Page 209?
This statement is cited in the commentary on Sunan Abi Dawood, Book of Al-Malaḥim, Chapter: Concerning the Story of Al-Jassasah, Hadith No. 4328 (5/2), and is taken from Al-Mukhtaṣar of Sunan Abi Dawood by Imam Mundhiri, Volume 6, Page 181:
Two key mistakes appear in the citation of the above statement in ‘Awn al-Ma‘bood:
① The phrase "فلما فحش ذلك منه" was incorrectly recorded as "فلما تحقق ذلك منه".
② The addition of "خبر ابن صائد" at the end is erroneous, as it is actually the heading of a new chapter in Sunan Abi Dawood, and not part of the previous statement.
The phrase "ولا يرويه غير الوليد بن جميع هذا" is the conclusion of the discussion, after which begins a new chapter titled "خبر ابن صائد".
Merging this new heading into the previous scholarly analysis or attributing it to Imam Mundhiri or Ibn ‘Adiyy al-Jurjani is incorrect.
– Imam Abu Dawood made no criticism on this Hadith.
– His silence, along with the comment "ليس به بأس" regarding Waleed ibn Jami‘, indicates he did not view the narration as below the level of ḥasan.
Unlike Imam Abu Dawood, Hafiz Mundhiri did not remain silent.
He included Waleed ibn Jami‘ in the isnad and pointed toward the possible weakness of the narration.
✔ Yahya ibn Ma‘in, Ibn Sa‘d, Al-‘Ajli
✔ Imam Ahmad, Abu Zur‘ah, Abu Dawood — (“ليس به بأس”)
✔ Abu Hatim — (“صالح الحديث”)
✔ Imam Muslim included him in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
✔ Hafiz Ibn Hajar described him as "صدوق" in Taqreeb
✔ Al-Bazzar wrote: “احتملوا حديثه”
✖ Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in both al-Thiqāt and al-Ḍu‘afā’
– He stated:
“تفرد عن الإثبات بما لا يشبه حديث الثقات”
✖ Abu Ja‘far al-‘Uqayli noted:
“في حديثه اضطراب”
→ This likely refers to differences in isnad across reports.
– In Fudhayl ibn Ghazwan’s narration, Abu Salamah reports from Jabir
– In Abu Nu‘aym’s version, Abu Salamah reports from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri
→ It is possible that the Hadith was transmitted by both Companions, making the claim of iḍṭirāb (confusion) questionable.
– The phrase “حديث الجساسۃ بطوله” is the object of the verb and refers to the complete narration of Jassasah.
– The pronoun "هذا" in “ولا يرويه غير الوليد بن جميع هذا” refers specifically to "حديث الجساسۃ".
① It could refer to the entire narration of Jassasah.
② Or it could refer to the specific part where Jabir testifies that Ibn Ṣayyād is the Dajjal.
– Though Waleed ibn Jami‘ is the only narrator of this narration, it does not contradict any more authentic report.
– The narration is supported by the Hadith of Fatimah bint Qays.
– Waleed ibn Jami‘ has been declared ṣadūq, ṣāliḥ al-ḥadīth, and thiqqah by multiple scholars.
– There is no proven error, forgetfulness, or clear mistake in his narration.
– Rejecting his report solely based on his being alone (tafarrud) is not justified.
