This excerpt is taken from Sheikh Muhammad Iqbal Kilani's book "Al-Wala Wal-Bara" .
عـــقــــاب ولاء الـــکــفـــار
A painful torment is the glad tidings for those who befriend disbelievers.
[بَشِّرِ الۡمُنٰفِقِیۡنَ بِاَنَّ لَہُمۡ عَذَابًا اَلِیۡمَۨا]،[ الَّذِیۡنَ یَتَّخِذُوۡنَ الۡکٰفِرِیۡنَ اَوۡلِیَآءَ مِنۡ دُوۡنِ الۡمُؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ؕ اَیَبۡتَغُوۡنَ عِنۡدَہُمُ الۡعِزَّۃَ فَاِنَّ الۡعِزَّۃَ لِلّٰہِ جَمِیۡعًا]
Give the glad tidings of a painful punishment to the hypocrites who make friends with the disbelievers instead of the believers. Do they seek honor from them? Indeed, all honor belongs to Allah alone.

[اَلَمۡ تَرَ اِلَی الَّذِیۡنَ تَوَلَّوۡا قَوۡمًا غَضِبَ اللّٰہُ عَلَیۡہِمۡ ؕ مَا ہُمۡ مِّنۡکُمۡ وَ لَا مِنۡہُمۡ ۙ وَ یَحۡلِفُوۡنَ عَلَی الۡکَذِبِ وَ ہُمۡ یَعۡلَمُوۡنَ]،[اَعَدَّ اللّٰہُ لَہُمۡ عَذَابًا شَدِیۡدًا ؕ اِنَّہُمۡ سَآءَ مَا کَانُوۡا یَعۡمَلُوۡنَ]
Have you not seen those who take as allies a people upon whom is the wrath of Allah? They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear to falsehood while they know. Allah has prepared for them a severe punishment. Indeed, what they are doing is very evil.

[تَرٰی کَثِیۡرًا مِّنۡہُمۡ یَتَوَلَّوۡنَ الَّذِیۡنَ کَفَرُوۡا ؕ لَبِئۡسَ مَا قَدَّمَتۡ لَہُمۡ اَنۡفُسُہُمۡ اَنۡ سَخِطَ اللّٰہُ عَلَیۡہِمۡ وَ فِی الۡعَذَابِ ہُمۡ خٰلِدُوۡنَ]
Do you see not that most of them are allies of the disbelievers? Very evil is that which their souls have sent before them, for that Allah has become angry with them, and they will abide in the punishment forever.

Friendship with disbelievers can at any time be a cause of Allah's punishment.
[یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا الۡکٰفِرِیۡنَ اَوۡلِیَآءَ مِنۡ دُوۡنِ الۡمُؤۡمِنِیۡنَؕ اَتُرِیۡدُوۡنَ اَنۡ تَجۡعَلُوۡا لِلّٰہِ عَلَیۡکُمۡ سُلۡطٰنًا مُّبِیۡنًا]
O you who have believed! Do not take disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do you wish to give Allah against yourselves a clear proof?
Reference: (Surah An-Nisa:144)
Those who befriend disbelievers have no relation with Allah.
[لَا یَتَّخِذِ الۡمُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ الۡکٰفِرِیۡنَ اَوۡلِیَآءَ مِنۡ دُوۡنِ الۡمُؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ۚ وَ مَنۡ یَّفۡعَلۡ ذٰلِکَ فَلَیۡسَ مِنَ اللّٰہِ فِیۡ شَیۡءٍ اِلَّاۤ اَنۡ تَتَّقُوۡا مِنۡہُمۡ تُقٰىۃً ؕ وَ یُحَذِّرُکُمُ اللّٰہُ نَفۡسَہٗ ؕ وَ اِلَی اللّٰہِ الۡمَصِیۡرُ]
A believer should not take disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Whoever does so has no relation with Allah. However, if you adopt such behavior to avoid the oppression of disbelievers (while remaining firm in your faith), it is forgiven. Allah warns you about Himself (and remember) you will return to Him.

Those who befriend disbelievers will have the same end as the disbelievers on the Day of Judgment.
Those who befriend disbelievers are deprived of Allah's guidance in this world.
[یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا الۡیَہُوۡدَ وَ النَّصٰرٰۤی اَوۡلِیَآءَ ۘؔ بَعۡضُہُمۡ اَوۡلِیَآءُ بَعۡضٍ ؕ وَ مَنۡ یَّتَوَلَّہُمۡ مِّنۡکُمۡ فَاِنَّہٗ مِنۡہُمۡ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ لَا یَہۡدِی الۡقَوۡمَ الظّٰلِمِیۡنَ]
O you who have believed! Do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies; they are allies of one another. And whoever among you takes them as allies is surely one of them. Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Reference: (Surah Al-Ma'idah:51)
Those who befriend disbelievers will be deprived of faith.
[وَ لَوۡ کَانُوۡا یُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ بِاللّٰہِ وَ النَّبِیِّ وَ مَاۤ اُنۡزِلَ اِلَیۡہِ مَا اتَّخَذُوۡہُمۡ اَوۡلِیَآءَ وَ لٰکِنَّ کَثِیۡرًا مِّنۡہُمۡ فٰسِقُوۡنَ]
If they had truly believed in Allah, the Prophet, and the revelation sent down to the Prophet, they would never have taken the disbelievers as allies against the believers. But most of them are defiantly disobedient.
Reference: (Surah Al-Ma'idah:81)
[یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡۤا اِنۡ تُطِیۡعُوۡا فَرِیۡقًا مِّنَ الَّذِیۡنَ اُوۡتُوا الۡکِتٰبَ یَرُدُّوۡکُمۡ بَعۡدَ اِیۡمَانِکُمۡ کٰفِرِیۡنَ]
O you who have believed, if you obey a group among those who were given the Scripture, they will turn you back on your heels after you have believed.
Reference: (Surah Aal Imran:100)
The outcome of friendship with disbelievers is regret and remorse.
[فَتَرَی الَّذِیۡنَ فِیۡ قُلُوۡبِہِمۡ مَّرَضٌ یُّسَارِعُوۡنَ فِیۡہِمۡ یَقُوۡلُوۡنَ نَخۡشٰۤی اَنۡ تُصِیۡبَنَا دَآئِرَۃٌ ؕ فَعَسَی اللّٰہُ اَنۡ یَّاۡتِیَ بِالۡفَتۡحِ اَوۡ اَمۡرٍ مِّنۡ عِنۡدِہٖ فَیُصۡبِحُوۡا عَلٰی مَاۤ اَسَرُّوۡا فِیۡۤ اَنۡفُسِہِمۡ نٰدِمِیۡنَ]
You see that those whose hearts have the disease of hypocrisy run to the disbelievers (to establish relations) and say, "We fear that we may be caught in some trouble without them," but it is not unlikely that when Allah grants you decisive victory or reveals some matter from Himself (i.e., punishment for the disbelievers), then these people will regret their hypocrisy which they have hidden in their hearts.

Looking at the culture and civilization of the disbelievers with admiration can also lead to going to Hell.
[وَ لَا تَرۡکَنُوۡۤا اِلَی الَّذِیۡنَ ظَلَمُوۡا فَتَمَسَّکُمُ النَّارُ ۙ وَ مَا لَکُمۡ مِّنۡ دُوۡنِ اللّٰہِ مِنۡ اَوۡلِیَآءَ ثُمَّ لَا تُنۡصَرُوۡنَ]
And do not incline toward the wrongdoers at all, lest the Fire should touch you, and you would have no protector against Allah, nor would you be helped.
Reference: (Surah Hud:113)
Those who befriend disbelievers will suffer loss in this world and the Hereafter.
[یٰۤاَیُّہَا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡۤا اِنۡ تُطِیۡعُوا الَّذِیۡنَ کَفَرُوۡا یَرُدُّوۡکُمۡ عَلٰۤی اَعۡقَابِکُمۡ فَتَنۡقَلِبُوۡا خٰسِرِیۡنَ]
O you who have believed, if you obey the disbelievers, they will turn you back on your heels, and you will [then] become losers.
Reference: (Surah Al-Imran:149)
Those who do not disassociate from the disbelievers are deprived of Allah's help.
[وَ لَئِنِ اتَّبَعۡتَ اَہۡوَآءَہُمۡ بَعۡدَ الَّذِیۡ جَآءَکَ مِنَ الۡعِلۡمِ ۙ مَا لَکَ مِنَ اللّٰہِ مِنۡ وَّلِیٍّ وَّ لَا نَصِیۡرٍ]
Then, if you follow their desires after what has come to you, there will be no protector or helper from Allah for you.
