✿ Rejection of Innovations and Superstitions in Light of Qur’an, Hadith, and Consensus of the Companions ✿
✍ Written by: Anila Atiq Sahiba
The religion of Islam is founded upon pure monotheism (Tawḥīd), following the Sunnah, and adherence to the commandments of Sharī‘ah. There is no room for innovations (Bid‘ah) and superstitions (Khurāfāt) in Islam, as these are unauthorized additions that result in distortion of the religion. In the light of the Qur’an, Hadith, and the consensus of the Companions (Ijmāʿ al-Ṣaḥābah), innovations are strongly condemned, and every newly introduced matter in religion is declared as misguidance.
Allah ﷻ has clearly declared that Islam is complete and needs neither addition nor omission:
اَلْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِيْ وَرَضِيْتُ لَكُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينًا
(Al-Mā’idah: 3)
"Today I have perfected for you your religion, and completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion."
This verse clearly affirms that the religion is complete, and hence, there is no need for any new addition to it.
Allah ﷻ severely condemns those who introduce unauthorized practices into the religion:
أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ شَرَعُوا لَهُم مِّنَ الدِّينِ مَا لَمْ يَأْذَن بِهِ اللَّهُ
(Al-Shūrā: 21)
"Or do they have partners (with Allah) who have instituted for them a religion which Allah has not authorized?"
This verse targets all those who invent new rituals and acts of worship in religion by their own will, which is nothing but clear misguidance.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared every innovation to be misguidance and strictly forbade it.
The Noble Prophet ﷺ said:
وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَمُحْدَثَاتِ الْأُمُورِ، فَإِنَّ كُلَّ مُحْدَثَةٍ بِدْعَةٌ وَكُلَّ بِدْعَةٍ ضَلَالَةٌ
(Abu Dāwūd: 4607, Tirmidhī: 2676)
"Beware of newly invented matters (in religion), for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance."
This Hadith makes it evident that any new addition to the religion is unacceptable and a clear deviation.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
مَنْ أَحْدَثَ فِي أَمْرِنَا هَذَا مَا لَيْسَ مِنْهُ فَهُوَ رَدٌّ
(Bukhārī: 2697, Muslim: 1718)
"Whoever introduces into our religion something that is not from it, then it is rejected."
This Hadith confirms that any newly introduced act in religion is unacceptable and rejected.
The Companions (Ṣaḥābah) also vehemently opposed innovations and never allowed any new element to be added to religion.
Sayyidunā ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه said:
كُلُّ بِدْعَةٍ ضَلَالَةٌ وَإِنْ رَآهَا النَّاسُ حَسَنَةً
(Dārimī: 96)
"Every innovation is misguidance, even if people consider it to be good."
This statement makes it clear that even if an innovation seems beneficial, it is still misguidance in the sight of Islam.
Sayyidunā ‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd رضي الله عنه said:
اتَّبِعُوا وَلَا تَبْتَدِعُوا، فَقَدْ كُفِيتُمْ
(Dārimī: 211)
"Follow (the religion) and do not innovate, for you have been given a complete religion."
This highlights the reality that there is no need for any new additions to Islam, as Allah ﷻ and His Messenger ﷺ have already granted us a complete religion.
In the light of the Qur’an, Hadith, and the consensus of the Companions, it is absolutely clear that there is no place for innovations in Islam. Every new addition to the religion is a misguidance, no matter how appealing it may appear. Muslims must follow only the Qur’an and Sunnah, and walk in the path of the noble Companions, for this is the only path to salvation.
