Source: Fatawa Ilmiyyah, Volume 3 – Miscellaneous Issues, Page 288

❖ Question

Who is Allama (!) Nabahani? What is his belief and status? Kindly provide a brief introduction.
(Question by: Muhammad Imran Azam)

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:

Yusuf bin Isma'il bin Yusuf al-Nabahani al-Shafi'i
(d. 1350 AH / 1932 CE) was an innovative "scholar" who authored books such as Shawahid al-Haqq fi al-Istighathah bil-Khalq, Jamiʿ Karamat al-Awliyaʾ, and al-Anwar al-Muhammadiyyah.

Among the scholars of truth, Allama Abu al-Maʿali Mahmood Shukri Al-Alusi رحمه الله (d. 1342 AH) authored a refutation titled “Ghayat al-Amani fi al-Radd ʿala al-Nabahani”.

al-Jawāb al-Fāʾiq fī al-Radd ʿalā Mubaddil al-Ḥaqāʾiq (by Abdullah Abdur-Rahman bin Jibreen, Vol. 1, p. 9 – via Maktabah al-Shamilah)

❖ Nabahani's Fabricated "Miracle"

Nabahani wrote about Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Alawi:

"One of his miracles was that he was sitting with someone from among the devotees who seek intercession, when he suddenly stood up and then returned, dripping water from his clothes. When asked the reason, he replied: 'One of my devotees was on a ship that got damaged. He called out to me for help, so I placed my garment over the tear until they managed to repair it, and the ship returned to its original condition.'"

(Jamal al-Awliya – translation of Jami' Karamat al-Awliya by Ashraf Ali Thanwi, p. 141-142)

❖ Belief Based on Shirk

This fabricated miracle is clearly rooted in Shirk, as it depicts the creation being called upon for supernatural help, bypassing Allah ﷻ.

For refutation of such deviant beliefs, see:
Surah al-Naml (Verse 62)

❖ Summary

This writer from the people of innovation, Nabahani, has no credibility in any narration where he is the sole narrator, due to his deviant and heretical beliefs. His narrations are inadmissible.

❖ Commentary by Shaykh Shams al-Din al-Afghani رحمه الله

Shaykh Shams al-Din al-Afghani رحمه الله commented regarding Yusuf bin Isma'il al-Nabahani al-Filastini:

"He was an accomplished poet and a refined literary figure, but he was a polytheist and a caller to Shirk and Kufr. He was among the leading Imams of grave-worshippers."

(Juhud ʿUlamāʾ al-Ḥanafiyyah fī Ibṭāl ʿAqāʾid al-Qubūriyyah, Vol. 1, p. 432)
