❖ A Reconciliatory Analysis of Two Hadiths Regarding Funeral Prayer for Martyrs ❖
Adapted from: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Vol. 1, Kitāb al-Janā’iz, p. 535
What is the ruling on offering funeral prayer (Ṣalāt al-Janāzah) for martyrs (shuhadāʾ)?
It is narrated in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī that the Prophet ﷺ did not perform the funeral prayer for martyrs:
"وَلَمْ يُغَسَّلُوا وَلَمْ يُصَلَّ عَلَيْهِمْ"
“They were neither washed nor was funeral prayer offered for them.”
(Bukhārī, Vol. 1, p. 179, Bāb aṣ-Ṣalāh ʿala ash-Shahīd)
Yet in another narration, it is reported:
"خَرَجَ يَوْمًا فَصَلَّى عَلَىٰ أَهْلِ أُحُدٍ صَلَاتَهُ عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ..."
“One day, the Prophet ﷺ came out and offered prayer for the martyrs of Uḥud as he would offer for the deceased.”
(Narration continues...)
This seems contradictory:
➤ One narration says the Prophet ﷺ did not offer funeral prayer for martyrs
➤ The other says he prayed for the martyrs of Uḥud
So the question arises:
Do the words "فَصَلَّى" in the second narration indicate the actual funeral prayer (Ṣalāt al-Janāzah)?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Amā baʿd:
✔ The first narration indicates that the Prophet ﷺ did not perform funeral prayer immediately after their martyrdom, nor did he order it.
✔ The second narration refers to an occasion after the battle, when the Prophet ﷺ returned—either the next day or several years later (e.g., 8 years after Uḥud)—and offered a supplication or prayer over their graves.
✔ The verb "فَصَلَّى" may refer to:
① A specific prayer—Ṣalāt al-Janāzah
② A general duʿāʾ (supplication) offered for the deceased
✔ Contextually, scholars interpret this as a form of prayer made after burial, not the standard funeral prayer, which includes takbīr and a standing congregation.
✔ Thus, there is no contradiction between the two narrations.
✔ The first narration affirms that no janāzah prayer was held at the time of burial
✔ The second narration records that the Prophet ﷺ later offered duʿāʾ over the martyrs, in the manner of praying for the deceased.
This interpretation is affirmed by reliable scholars and referenced in:
Shahādat Magazine, March 2001 edition
◈ The Prophet ﷺ did not offer Ṣalāt al-Janāzah for the martyrs of Uḥud at the time of their burial.
◈ Later, he visited their graves and offered a supplication similar in spirit to funeral prayer.
◈ "Fasallā" here does not mean that the original funeral rites were delayed—but rather indicates a duʿāʾ session honoring the martyrs.
