Recommended Supplication During Intimacy

Adapted from: The book 500 Questions and Answers for Women, based on the fatwas of the scholars of Haramain. Translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

Question:

What is the recommended supplication when a husband and wife engage in intimacy? Is there any specific prayer or action required after intimacy?

Answer:

When a husband and wife intend to engage in intimacy (jimaa'), it is recommended (mustahabb) for both to recite the following supplication:

"بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ جَنِّبْنَا الشَّيْطَانَ، وَجَنِّبِ الشَّيْطَانَ مَا رَزَقْتَنَا"

"In the name of Allah, O Allah, keep Satan away from us, and keep Satan away from what You provide us (i.e., offspring) as a result of this."
[Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 141; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1434]

Purpose of the Supplication

  • Protection from Satan: This supplication seeks Allah's protection from Satan interfering during intimacy or with any resulting offspring.
  • Noble Intention: Both husband and wife should intend to seek chastity, modesty, and the blessings of procreation through this act, rather than merely fulfilling physical desires.

Clarifications

  1. No Specific Prayer After Intimacy:
There is no prescribed prayer for either spouse to perform after intimacy.
  2. Friday Ghusl (Bath) and Supplication:
No specific supplication is required for the Friday ghusl (ritual bath). It is an act of cleanliness and worship.

Conclusion

  • Before Intimacy: Recite the recommended supplication seeking Allah’s protection from Satan.
  • After Intimacy: Perform ghusl (ritual bath) before engaging in acts of worship or daily activities, as there are no specific prayers or supplications required immediately after intimacy.
  • Always maintain a noble intention to seek Allah’s pleasure through lawful marital relations.
And Allah knows best.
