Question:
Is it correct to recite Durood in the first Tashahhud? (Detailed Answer)
Source: Aḥkām wa Masā’il, Ṣalāh Section, Vol. 1, p.195
Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!
Yes, it is correct to recite Durood in the first Tashahhud.
The evidence for this is the verse of the Noble Qur’an:
﴿يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ صَلُّواْ عَلَيۡهِ وَسَلِّمُواْ تَسۡلِيمًا﴾
— Al-Aḥzāb: 65
Furthermore, in a ḥadīth, the noble Companions (رضي الله عنهم) submitted to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:
"You have already taught us the Salām (i.e., At-Taḥiyyāt), now how should we send Durood upon you?”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied:
«قُوْلُوْا اَللّٰہُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰی مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلٰی آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ» الخ
Meaning: “Say: O Allah! Send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad…”
There exists no authentic marfūʿ ḥadīth which indicates that Durood should not be recited in the first Tashahhud.
It should be kept in mind that according to the Sharīʿah, it is permissible and established to recite supplications in both the first and the second Tashahhud.
