Question:
It is said that whoever recites Surah Yaseen every morning, all their needs for the day will be fulfilled. Verification of this narration is requested. (Summarized from the letter of Habibullah Ustad Kandhi Mughalzai, Peshawar)Answer:
This narration is found in Sunan al-Darimi [Vol. 2, p. 457, Hadith 3421, verified edition Hadith 3461] through the chain of Ata bin Abi Rabah (a Tabi'i), who said: "It has reached me that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said". The author of Mishkat has also cited this narration from al-Darimi [Hadith 2177, verified by me].This narration is weak due to it being mursal (a break in the chain of narrators) and the actor of "بلغني" (it has reached me) is unknown.
Weak and Rejected Narrations Regarding the Virtues of Surah Yaseen
1. Narration:
"Indeed, everything has a heart, and the heart of the Quran is Surah Yaseen. Whoever recites Surah Yaseen, Allah will record for him the recitation of the Quran ten times."Source: Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2887 from Qatadah from Anas (رضی اللہ عنہ). Also in Tablighi Nisab, p. 292, Fada'il Quran, p. 58.
Note:
Imam Tirmidhi mentions one of the narrators, Harun Abu Muhammad, as "a unknown Sheikh." Hence, due to Harun being unknown, this narration is weak. Shaykh Al-Albani has classified it as fabricated. [Al-Da'eefa Vol. 1, p. 202, Hadith 169]. Imam Abu Hatim Al-Razi claimed that the narrator of this Hadith is a liar: Maqatil bin Sulaiman [‘Ilal al-Hadith Vol. 2, p. 56, Hadith 1652]. However, in Sunan Tirmidhi and Sunan al-Darimi [Vol. 2, p. 456, Hadith 3419], Tariq Baghdad [Vol. 4, p. 167], Maqatil bin Hayan is trustworthy. Allah knows best.
The above narration has been translated by Zakariya Sahib Tablighi Deobandi as follows: "Everything has a heart. The heart of the Quran is Surah Yaseen. Whoever recites Surah Yaseen, Allah will record for him the reward of reciting the Quran ten times."
2. Narration:
In this regard, Imam Tirmidhi writes about the narration of Sayyidina Abu Bakr Siddiq (رضی اللہ عنہ) that: "Its chain is not authentic and its chain is weak." [Tirmidhi: 2887]3. Narration:
"Indeed, everything has a heart, and the heart of the Quran is Surah Yaseen."Source: Kashf al-Astar 'an Zawa'id al-Bazzar Vol. 3, p. 87, Hadith 2304 from 'Ata from Abu Huraira (رضی اللہ عنہ).
Note:
Shaykh Al-Albani states: "And Humayd is unknown, as Hafiz stated in Taqrib, and Abdul Rahman bin al-Fadl, the teacher of Bazzar, I do not know him." [Al-Da'eefa Vol. 1, p. 204]. The primary narrator, Humayd (al-Makki Mawla Aal Alqamah, Tafsir Ibn Kathir 3/570) is unknown as Hafiz Ibn Hajar stated in Taqrib al-Tahdhib. Also, Bazzar's teacher, Abdul Rahman bin al-Fadl, is not recognized.
4. Narration:
"Whoever recites Surah Yaseen in the night, will be forgiven in the morning."Source:
Musnad Abi Ya'la Vol. 11, p. 93-94, Hadith 6324 and others from the route of Hisham bin Ziyad from al-Hasan who said: I heard Abu Huraira narrating it.
Note: This narration's chain is severely weak. Hisham bin Ziyad is discarded [Taqrib, p. 364, No. 7292].
5. Narration:
"Whoever recites Surah Yaseen in the night seeking Allah's face, will be forgiven that night."Source: Al-Darimi Hadith 3420 and others.
Note: This narration is weak due to discontinuity in the chain. Al-Hasan al-Basri did not meet Sayyidina Abu Huraira (رضی اللہ عنہ). Furthermore, he is a known Mudallis and narrates with 'an'ana.
6. Narration:
"Whoever recites Surah Yaseen in the night seeking Allah's face, will be forgiven."Source:
Sahih Ibn Hibban: Mawarid al-Zamaan, Hadith 665 and others from al-Hasan al-Basri from Jundub (رضی اللہ عنہ).
Note:
This narration is weak due to discontinuity in the chain. Abu Hatim Al-Razi said: "Al-Hasan did not hear from Jundub." [Al-Marasel, p. 42]. Refer to the previous Hadith (No. 5) as well.
7. Narration:
"Whoever recites Surah Yaseen seeking Allah's face, his past sins will be forgiven. So recite it near your dead."Source: Al-Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman, Hadith 2458 from Ma'qal bin Yasar (رضی اللہ عنہ).
Note:
Its chain is weak due to an unknown narrator: Abu Uthman (not Al-Nahdi) and his father. This narration is briefly mentioned in Musnad Ahmad [5/26-27], Mustadrak Al-Hakim [1/565], Sahih Ibn Hibban [Al-Ihsan 7/269, Hadith 2991, and verified edition Hadith 3002], Sunan Abi Dawud [3121], and Sunan Ibn Majah [1448]. Imam Al-Daraqutni has classified it as weak. In Musnad Ahmad [4/105], there is also a weak supporting narration.
8. Narration:
"Whoever recites Surah Yaseen in the night, will be forgiven in the morning."Source:
Hilyat al-Awliya Vol. 4, p. 130 from Abdullah bin Mas'ud (رضی اللہ عنہ).
Note:
Its chain is fabricated due to Abu Maryam Abdul Ghafar bin Al-Qasim Al-Kufi. He was a known liar and fabricator. See Lisan al-Mizan [Vol. 4, p. 50-51].
9. Narration:
"Whoever recites Surah Yaseen, it is equivalent to twenty Hajj. Whoever writes it and then drinks it, a thousand certainties and a thousand mercies will enter his body, and every disease and ailment will be removed from him."Source:
Hilyat al-Awliya Vol. 7, p. 136 from al-Harith (al-A'war) from Ali.
Note:
This narration is severely weak due to al-Harith al-A'war's extreme weakness along with Abu Ishaq's Tadlis.
10. Narration:
"I wish it were in the heart of every person of my Ummah, meaning Surah Yaseen."Source:
Al-Bazzar: Kashf al-Astar Vol. 3, p. 87, Hadith 2305 from Ibn Abbas.
Note:
Its narrator, Ibrahim bin Al-Hakam bin Aban, is weak [Taqrib: 166].
11. Narration:
"Whoever recites Surah Yaseen during the throes of death or near a dying person, the keeper of Paradise will come to him with a drink from the drink of Paradise, and he will give it to him while he is on his bed. He will drink it, and he will die quenched and will be raised quenched, and will not need any pond from the ponds of the Prophets."Source: Al-Wasit by Al-Wahidi Vol. 3, p. 509.
Note:
This narration is fabricated. Yusuf bin Atiyah Al-Saffar is discarded [See Taqrib al-Tahdhib: 7872] and Harun bin Kathir is unknown, see Lisan al-Mizan [Vol. 6, p. 218].
12. Narration:
"Whoever recites Surah Yaseen, it is as if he has recited the Quran ten times."Source:
Shu'ab al-Iman by Al-Bayhaqi, Hadith 2459.
Note:
This narration is mursal due to Hassan bin Atiyah, and Ismail bin Ayash is a Mudallis [Tabqat al-Mudallisin: 68/3].
13. Narration:
"Surah Yaseen is called the comforter in the Torah..."Source:
Shu'ab al-Iman Hadith 2465, Al-Du'afa by Al-Aqeeli Vol. 2, p. 143, Al-Amali by Al-Shajari Vol. 1, p. 118, Tariq Baghdad by Al-Khatib Vol. 2, p. 387-388, Al-Mawdu'at by Ibn Al-Jawzi Vol. 1, p. 347. Also in Tablighi Nisab, p. 292-293, Fada'il Quran p. 58-59.
Note:
This narration's chain is fabricated. Muhammad bin Abdul Rahman bin Abi Bakr Al-Jad'ani is discarded, and several other narrators are unknown. Imam Al-Bayhaqi said: "It is rejected." Imam Al-Aqeeli also classified it as rejected. It has another chain in Tariq Baghdad and Al-Mawdu'at by Ibn Al-Jawzi. Its narrator, Muhammad bin Abd bin Amir Al-Samarqandi, was a liar and thief.
14. Narration:
"I have made it obligatory for my Ummah to recite Surah Yaseen every night. Whoever continues to recite it every night and then dies, dies as a martyr."Source:
Al-Amali by Al-Shajari Vol. 1, p. 118.
Note:
This narration is fabricated. Many of its narrators, such as Umar bin Sa'd Al-Waqasi, Abu Hamzah bin Umar bin Hafs, and Abu Amir Muhammad bin Abdul Rahim, are unknown.
Summary
The summary is that all Marfu' narrations (narrations attributed directly to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) regarding the virtues of Surah Yaseen are weak and rejected.◈ Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) states:"Umar bin Zarara narrated to us: 'Abdulwahab narrated to us: Rashid Abu Muhammad Al-Hamani narrated to us from Shahr bin Hawshab who said: Ibn Abbas (رضی اللہ عنہ) said: Whoever recites Surah Yaseen in the morning, will be given ease until the evening, and whoever recites it at the beginning of the night, will be given ease until the morning (i.e., their day and night will pass with comfort and ease).'
[Sunan al-Darimi 1/457, Hadith 3422, second edition: 3462, and its chain is Hasan (good)]."
Brief Introduction of the Narrators:
- Umar bin Zarara:
- Trustworthy and reliable [Taqrib al-Tahdhib: 5032].
- Abdulwahab Al-Thaqafi:
- Trustworthy, but his memory changed three years before his death [Taqrib al-Tahdhib: 4261].
- However, the change did not affect his narrations as he did not narrate during the period of change [Mizan al-I'tidal 2/681].
- Rashid bin Najeeh Al-Hamani:
- Honest, but he sometimes made mistakes [Taqrib al-Tahdhib: 1857].
- Al-Busiri graded his narration as Hasan [Zawaid Ibn Majah: 3371].
- He is considered a Hasan al-Hadith narrator.
- Shahr bin Hawshab:
- A narrator with differing opinions about him. The majority of Hadith scholars have authenticated him [as I have verified in my book: Takhrij al-Nihaya fi al-Fitan wa al-Malahim p. 119-120].
- Ibn Kathir considered one of his narrations as Hasan [Musnad al-Faruq Vol. 1, p. 228].
- According to our research, he is Hasan al-Hadith. Allah knows best.
