Background of the Question

You inquired about what magic is and whether the Prophet ﷺ was ever afflicted by it. You referred to a well-known hadith and sought clarification on its authenticity. You also mentioned that some of your relatives have allegedly performed magic upon your household, particularly affecting your respected mother, and requested guidance according to the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Evidence that Magic Was Done to the Prophet ﷺ

From Sahih Bukhari

  • It is authentically established in Sahih al-Bukhari that the Prophet ﷺ was affected by magic.
  • The magic was performed by a Jew named Labeed ibn A‘sam.
  • Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Medicine (Kitab al-Tibb), Chapter on Magic (Bab al-Sihr).
  • This magic did have some effect upon the Prophet ﷺ, but Allah ﷻ granted him complete cure after he made du‘a.

Evidence from the Qur’an on the Effect of Magic

From the story of Musa (Moses)

(Taha: 66–67)
“Then suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him, by their magic, as though they were moving swiftly. So Musa felt some fear in himself.”

These verses show that magic is a reality and can have psychological or visual effects on a person.

Islamic Remedies for Protection and Cure from Magic

If someone is afflicted by magic:

  1. Make sincere du‘a to Allah ﷻ for removal of the affliction and complete protection.
  2. Recite Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas (al-Mu‘awwidhatayn) regularly.
  3. Recite Surah Al-Baqarah, especially Ayat al-Kursi.
  4. Consistently perform these recitations in the morning, evening, and before sleeping.

Promise of Allah ﷻ:

﴿وَلاَ يُفْلِحُ السَّاحِرُونَ﴾ — Yunus: 77
“The magicians will never be successful.”

Conclusion

  • Magic is a reality, confirmed by both Qur’an and Sunnah.
  • The Prophet ﷺ was affected by magic, as authentically narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari.
  • The Qur’an mentions its effects, as in the story of Musa عليه السلام.
  • The believer should turn to Qur’anic recitations (Mu‘awwidhatayn, Ayat al-Kursi, Surah al-Baqarah) and du‘a for protection and healing.
