Raising the Voice in Takbeer on the Day of Eid

Reciting Takbeeraat Aloud on the Day of Eid
Written by: Abu al-Asqa‘ Qari Usamah bin Abd al-Salam

Introduction

Reciting Takbeeraat aloud while going for the Eid prayer is a Sunnah, as practiced by the Companions This act is supported by evidence from the Qur’an, authentic Hadiths, and the actions of the Sahabah.

➊ Evidence from the Noble Qur’an

Allah ﷻ says:

(Surah Al-Baqarah: 185)
(That you may glorify Allah for having guided you, and that you may be grateful.)

This verse proves the legitimacy of Takbeeraat on the day of Eid, as Allah commands us to declare His greatness.

➋ Evidence from Hadith

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar

(The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would go out on the days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha raising his voice in Takbeer.)
(Al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir by al-Tabarani: 11367 – Authentic Chain)

➌ Practice of the Noble Companions

Narrated by Nafi‘

Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما used to go to the marketplace on the days of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, reciting Takbeeraat aloud, and when people heard him, they also began to recite Takbeeraat.
(Sahih al-Bukhari – Chapter: Takbeer on the Day of Eid)

➍ Prescribed Wordings of Takbeeraat

Numerous wordings of Takbeeraat have been reported. The most common and widely accepted among them is:

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمْدُ.

Translation:

Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no deity except Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and all praise belongs to Allah.

➎ When and Where Should Takbeeraat Be Recited?

✅ On the night of Eid:
Begin reciting Takbeeraat as soon as the new moon of Eid is sighted.

✅ While going for Eid prayer:
Recite Takbeeraat on the way to the prayer place and continue until arrival.

✅ At the Eid ground:
It is recommended (mustahabb) to mention Takbeer aloud before the Eid prayer.

✅ In markets, homes, and streets:
The Companions used to recite Takbeeraat openly in various places, spreading the greatness of Allah throughout the community.

✿ Conclusion

Reciting Takbeeraat aloud on the day of Eid is a Sunnah practice, proven from the Prophet ﷺ, his Companions, and the Pious Predecessors. We should follow this Sunnah by proclaiming Allah’s greatness on this joyous occasion, so our celebrations become acts of worship and Shaytan is filled with despair.
