❀ Raising Hands on Every Takbīr in Prayer? A Review of the Authentic Position ❀
Based on: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Vol. 1, Kitāb aṣ-Ṣalāh, Page 403
Is it Sunnah to raise the hands on every takbīr during ṣalāh?
Some claim this based on the opinion of Shaykh Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Albānī رحمه الله.
What is the correct ruling?
Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā baʿd!
The narrations that mention raising the hands on every takbīr in prayer are all weak (ḍaʿīf).
It is acknowledged that Shaykh Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Albānī رحمه الله, held the view that raising the hands on every takbīr is Sunnah.
However, in this particular matter, Shaykh al-Albānī erred (ijtihādī mistake), and his stance is not supported by authentic narrations.
The only takbīr where raising the hands is firmly established through sound ḥadīth is:
✔ The takbīr before rukūʿ (bowing)
“The Prophet ﷺ used to raise his hands before going into rukūʿ.”
Source: Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Ḥadīth 722
✔ This ḥadīth is authentic. (ṣaḥīḥ)
✦ Raising the hands on every takbīr during ṣalāh is not proven from any authentic Sunnah.
✦ The only confirmed instance is before rukūʿ, and that is Sunnah.
✦ Shaykh al-Albānī’s view on this matter is not supported by sound evidence, and is considered a mistake in judgment.
