Is Raf‘ al-Yadayn (raising the hands in prayer) proven from the ten companions promised Paradise (Asharah Mubashsharah)? And is there any book that lists this practice from all of them in order?❖ Answer
For any action or statement to be authenticated from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, a narration from even a single companion—whether from the Asharah Mubashsharah or any other Sahabi—is sufficient. There is no condition that it must be reported by all ten companions in a sequential or collective manner.❖ Example
The practice of raising the hands during the Qunoot in Witr prayer is not reported from all ten Asharah Mubashsharah, yet many still perform it based on other valid narrations.Similarly, Raf‘ al-Yadayn before and after ruku‘ is authentically established from the Prophet ﷺ and is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, particularly through companions such as ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar and Malik ibn Huwairith رضي الله عنهم.
❖ Conclusion
It is not necessary to have narrations of Raf‘ al-Yadayn from each of the Asharah Mubashsharah. A single authentic narration from one companion is sufficient proof for the legitimacy of the practice.Wallahu A‘lam — And Allah knows best.
