Question

Does reciting the Qur’an at the grave benefit the deceased?

Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

✿ Reciting the Qur’an at the grave is not established; in fact, it is prohibited. Moreover, it does not benefit the deceased.

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (RA) (728 AH) said:

من قال : إنه عند القبر ينتفع الميت بسماعها دون ما إذا بعد القاري، فقوله هذا بدعة باطلة مخالفة لإجماع العلماء.

“Whoever says that if the Qur’an is recited at the grave, the deceased benefits from hearing it, but not if it is recited from afar—then such a statement is an innovation, false, and contrary to the consensus of scholars.”
(Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā, 31/42)
