Qur’an as the Speech of Allah: Consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah and the Misguidance of Innovated Sects

❖ Question
Is the Qur’an the speech of Allah?
❖ Answer
The Qur’an is the true speech of Allah ﷻ. Allah spoke it with sound and letters, and His speech was heard. Jibreel (عليه السلام) heard it directly from Allah, and the Prophet ﷺ heard it from Jibreel. Both the words and the meanings belong to Allah ﷻ. On this matter, there is consensus (ijma‘) of Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama‘ah.
The Mu‘tazilah, Ash‘aris, and their followers went astray in the issue of Divine Speech. They deviated from the belief of Ahl al-Sunnah, at times saying it is kalam nafsi (internal speech), and at other times affirming the speech but denying sound and letters.
❀ ʿAllamah Abu al-Muzaffar al-Sam‘ani (رحمه الله, 489H) said:
القرآن كلام الله غير مخلوق، وعليه إجماع أهل السنة، وزعموا أن من قال إنه مخلوق فهو كافر؛ لأن فيه نفي كلام الله تعالى.
“The Qur’an is the speech of Allah, uncreated. There is consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah upon this. They also state that whoever says it is created is a disbeliever, for this negates the attribute of speech for Allah the Exalted.”
